The Young Advocates for the
Advancement of ICT-related Development (Y.A.A.ICT-D) was born
out the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) first
phase in 2003. Y.A.A.ICT-D was founded by Kenneth Harry
Msiska while he was still a student at the Malawi Polytechnic
a constituent college of the University of Malawi. Kenneth
was inspired by the Role of Science in the Information
Society (RSIS) Fellowship award he got prior to the WSIS
Geneva Meeting. Later, Y.A.A.ICT-D became a student outreach
group which promoted the participation and recognition of the
youth in Malawi as innovators and agents of change in the
area of ICT.
Currently the organization is
registered as a youth NGO by the National Youth Council of
Malawi pursuant to the National Youth Council Act of 1996 and
also as a Trust under the Trustees and Incorporation Act of
1962.
Since its inception Y.A.A.ICT-D has received support from the
following organizations: Technical Centre for Agricultural
and Rural Cooperation (CTA), Oxfam Australia, The Malawi
Communications Authority (MACRA), Nico Technologies, The
United States Embassy in Lilongwe, The Open Society
Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA), Hivos Foundation,
Friends of Malawi (FOM) and The International Development and
Relief Foundation (IDRF). From the list above only The US
Embassy, MACRA and Nico are the local organizations that have supported Y.A.A.ICT-D since its inception. |
