Hivos Regional Director for Southern Africa,
Margreet van Doodewaard, Visits Y.A.A.ICT-D
On 28th June 2011 Margreet van Doodewaard, The
Hivos Regional Director for Southern Africa call on Y.A.A.ICT-D to
appreciate the work that the Hivos partner is doing in Malawi.
Margreet was taken to Chafuta Primary School in Mchinji District.
Chafuta Primary School was started by a village Social Entrepreneur,
Gerald Bazali who upon noticing the plight of the children in the
village who had to walk long distances to attend school decided to
start a Junior Primary School in his area. When Y.A.A.ICT-D through
Bwalo Lathu, an issue-based radio program that used to air on Zodiak
Broadcasting Corporation with support from Hivos, visited the area
many people learnt about the existence of the school which was not
duly recognized by the government. After airing the radio program the
school got registered and two Teachers were sent to the area.
Additionally a borehole was sunk at the school.
At the time of Margreet’s visit, a school block
was under construction. In her speech Margreet expressed her delight
at how a simple radio program can unlock a lot of development for an
area. She promised Hivos’ continued support to the Young Advocates in
order for it to continue serving the people that benefit from its
efforts.
In his remarks the Group Village Headman
Makumbira pleaded for support towards the construction of the school
which had stalled due to lack of construction materials.
